where there is beauty there is a picture (2009)

Ariane Loze and Rebecca Lenaerts

Simply a slideshow: at the beginning of their performance, Lenaerts and Loze work with rather traditional media. But the pictures from fleamarkets, archives and forgotten packing cases soon develop a life of their own. „Where there is beauty, there is a picture“ celebrates the power of interpretation. The artists combine the slides with text- and music fragments, they associate, recombine and discard, invent new possibilities and make suggestions. A story evolves, that always could be another – a story, that uncovers more about the audience than the protagonists. Ariane Loze and Rebecca Lenaerts were invited to a residency at the Pact-Zollverein Essen with this production. The piece was premiered at the transeuropa festival 2009 in Hildesheim (May17th, 18th 2009, Theater für Niedersachsen, theo)

‘WHERE THERE IS BEAUTY, THERE IS A PICTURE’ is a live performance with old slides from the fifties, sixties and seventies. Someone who thought it was worth it to take these photos. But they have been abandoned, thrown away.

Who are the people on these pictures? What happened at the moment the pictures were taken? And most of all, what do they try to tell us?

‘WHERE THERE IS BEAUTY, THERE IS A PICTURE’ is a still image story with an uncompleted storyline. It’s a performance based on our interpretation of images and the associations we can create between them, about our ability to rethink our biography and our habit to archive our life.
